Biogen will invest one billion francs in Switzerland to build one of the most advanced biotech production plants in the world. Located in the canton of Solothurn, the new site should be operational by 2019 and allow for the creation of 400 jobs. Biogen was founded in 1978 in Geneva by a small group of accomplished scientists and is now one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies, employing more than 7,500 people in 30 countries. It is focused on developing therapies for neurodegenerative, hematologic and autoimmune disorders.

Biogen will be in good company as more and more leading life sciences firms choose to invest in Switzerland. Belgian drugmaker UCB has recently opened a new biotech plant in Bulle, in the canton of Fribourg. It is one of the largest and most modern sites in Europe and represents a total investment of around 300 million francs. CSL Behring chose Lengnau (canton of Bern) for its new production base last year. Bern was already home to the company’s biggest commercial production facility for plasma-based therapies. US multinational biopharma company Celgene announced last year the construction of a new production site in Val de Travers (canton of Neuchâtel), which should be operational by 2018. In October 2014, Merck Serono opened a new site in Aubonne (Canton of Vaud).

Interpharma, the association of research-based pharmaceutical companies in Switzerland, welcomes Biogen’s investment decision, which is “a clear proof of the attractiveness of Switzerland as a business location.”
