The Federal Council today announced its decision to add the SIP Biel/Bienne site to the initial configuration of the Swiss Innovation Park, a nationwide network for research and development. Expected to be launched in 2016, it will contribute to maintain Switzerland’s leading role as a nation of innovators and further strengthen its competitiveness.

It’s official: the SIP Biel/Bienne will be part of the Swiss Innovation Park network. Located in the heart of Switzerland, the SIP Biel/Bienne will focus on key industrial technologies such as mechatronics and microelectronic systems, as well as sensor, material and production technologies.

The concept behind the Swiss Innovation Park is to create centers that combine top-notch research and entrepreneurial innovativeness in the proximity of leading universities and research institutions, so that established companies can work together with researchers and scientists to translate innovative ideas into market-ready products.

The Swiss Innovation Park will be spread over several locations across the country: two hub sites are based in the vicinity of the two federal institutes of technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and Zurich (ETHZ), while three network sites are located in Biel/Bienne, in the canton of Aargau and in the region of Northwestern Switzerland.

As a Swiss Innovation Park network location, SIP Biel/Bienne will help maintain Switzerland’s position as the most innovative and competitive country in the world.
