A new milestone for cell biology and microscopy
12 April 2017
EPFL spin-off Nanolive has launched the first holo-tomographic fluorescent microscope in the world. The 3D Cell Explorer-fluo offers groundbreaking insights into living cells, in motion and in 3D.
One year after launching the first microscope able to look inside living cells without harming them, in 3D and real time, Nanolive achieves another world first. Its newest microscope, the 3D Cell Explorer-fluo, combines the benefits from non-invasive cell tomography with a well-established method known as multi-channel fluorescence microscopy. According to a press release, this unprecedented combination allows to measure specific cell compartments in a 100% non-invasive fashion, for an unlimited amount of time and in 3D.
Up to now, some type of cells could not be labeled or analyzed because too delicate or extremely sensitive to bleaching or phototoxicity. Thanks to Nanolive’s technology, quantitative values can be obtained for the whole cell. This revolution in live cell analysis will allow scientists to monitor the effects of drugs and stimuli on virtually any kind of cell and without interfering with the normal cell physiology.
