A joint effort between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/index.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EPFL<\/a>), the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csem.ch\/Home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSEM<\/a>) and the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NREL<\/a>) has resulted in the development of new silicon-based multi-junction solar cells with record efficiency. Multi-junction solar cells combine silicon with a cell that absorbs blue light from the sun more efficiently. The researchers were able to achieve an efficiency of 32.8 % for dual-junction solar cells, and of 35.9 % for triple-junction solar cells, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csem.ch\/Page.aspx?pid=35271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beating their own previous record of 29.8%.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Economical and highly efficient<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These achievements, published in the scientific journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nenergy2017144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Nature Energy<\/em><\/a>, will contribute to making solar energy more accessible, as explained by Christophe Ballif, Director of CSEM\u2019s PV-center and EPFL Photovoltaics laboratory, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csem.ch\/Doc.aspx?id=47028&amp;name=CP17-08-NREL-CSEM-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>: \u201cThese records show that combining crystalline silicon and other materials is the way forward if we are to improve solar power\u2019s cost\/efficiency ratio\u201d. The CSEM is actively working towards an efficient, cost-friendly solar energy cell, and currently testing new materials in order to optimize solar power&#8217;s cost\/efficiency ratio.
