31 August-2 September 2018, EPFL campus, Lausanne, Switzerland

EPFL, known especially for its research and innovations in robotics, is organizing EPFL Drone Days 2018, which will take place from Friday 31 August till Sunday 2 September.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) is hosting the second edition of the EPFL Drone Days. Organized with the support of the World Air Sports Federation (FAI), the Swiss Rotor Sports Association (SRSA) and the EPFL association AéroPoly, the event will feature drone races, a robotics expo and expert speakers from around the world. It will highlight the many applications for drones, their increasing use in everyday life and issues of airspace management. Demonstrations, hands-on workshops and flying sessions for the public – whether in VR or FPV modes – will further enhance the event.

In Switzerland, research and industry are at the forefront of flying robotics and unmanned systems. The National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Robotics, which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, plays an important role in this. It brings together leading experts from EPFL, ETH, University of Zurich, Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research, and the University of Bern. It supports start-ups and SMEs, encourages entrepreneurship and promotes spin-off creation in the field of robotics and drones. Swiss companies are among the most innovative in the field, and some have been bought out by foreign companies. These include EPFL spinoffs senseFly and Pix4D, which are now majority-owned by the French firm Parrot, the second largest drone manufacturer in the world.
