A Valais-based start-up is launching a training program for future drone pilots. The first classes will start mid-August.
“We will be the first school with actual premises in Switzerland to offer similar teaching programs”, explains Frédéric Hemmeler, head of Fly & Film. The new flight school will offer an introductory program focused on recreational drone flying, as well as an advanced program intended for those who are interested in operating drones professionally or in providing drone-related services. The program grants a certificate which could be recognized by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) should a license be required for flying drones in the future. Currently, up to a weight of 30 kg drones can be operated without a special permission under the condition that the pilot has eye contact with the flying object at any time.
The best students will have the opportunity to receive specific training in the area of agricultural drones, where Fly & Film is focusing its activities. Based at the Techno-Pôle in Sierre, in the canton of Valais, the company uses civil drones for commercial purposes in sectors including tourism, sport, industry, construction, agriculture, forest protection, mountain rescue and filming.
