Many critical technological and social problems call for interdisciplinary solutions today. In order to better address these challenges, the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) has decided to concentrate and strengthen its expertise in four specific areas through the establishment of interdisciplinary research groups.

The four BFH centers were launched earlier in June and are unique in Switzerland in the way they are set up and their holistic approach. Each one of them focuses on an expertise pole of the Canton of Bern, explains a BFH press release.

The BFH Centre for Technologies in Sport and Medicine combines the research and development activities of various institutes in the field of micro-technology with a focus on competitive sports, prevention, rehabilitation and medical technology. The BFH Centre for Social Security generates fundamental knowledge of social risks in order to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of the overall social security system. The BFH Centre for Food Systems combines research and development on issues that are key to healthy, high-quality food production. Last but not least, the BFH Centre for Wood – Resource and Material researches and promotes ecologically and economically efficient solutions for an intelligent use of wood – and makes them available to end-users.
