The World Economic Forum, in cooperation with INSEAD, a leading international business school, produced the Global Information Technology Report 2009-2010. It highlights the key role of information and communication technologies (ICT) as enabling a more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable world. The report covers 133 economies worldwide, thus standing as a comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of ICT on the development process and the competitiveness of nations. 

Switzerland ranks 4^th in the 2009-2010 edition. “Over the years, Switzerland […] has evolved into an innovation powerhouse. Ranked 16^th among 75 countries in the first NRI edition in 2001-02, the country has been consistently ranked in the top five for the last four editions.”[i] This top position is explained mostly by businesses. They seem “ to be at the forefront of ICT readiness and diffusion, as suggested by the outstanding marks the business sector gets for its readiness (1^st) and usage (2^nd). Switzerland also offers an extremely conducive environment for ICT development (4^th), with an extensive availability of quality soft and hard infrastructure, favorable regulations, and excellent market environment.”[ii]
